Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp plain (all-purpose) flour helps thicken the juices
  • 0.5 cup white sugar or use light brown sugar for deeper flavor
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice brightens and prevents browning
  • 0.5 tsp ground cinnamon
For the Crumble Topping
  • 1 cup rolled oats quick oats work fine too
  • 1 cup plain (all-purpose) flour
  • 1 cup brown sugar loosely packed
  • 0.5 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 125 g unsalted butter melted
  • 1 pinch salt balances sweetness
To Serve
  • Vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or custard for serving

Method

  1. Step 1 – Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 180°C / 350°F. This ensures even baking and a golden top.
  2. Step 2 – Prepare the apples: Peel, core, and chop the apples into 1.5 cm cubes. Even pieces cook evenly and keep texture.
  3. Step 3 – Make the apple filling: Toss apples with flour, sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice until coated. Spread evenly in a 1.5-litre baking dish.
  4. Step 4 – Mix the crumble topping: Combine oats, flour, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, melted butter, and salt. Mix until the texture resembles damp sand with clumps.
  5. Step 5 – Assemble and bake: Scatter crumble mixture evenly over apples, pressing lightly. Bake for 30–40 minutes until golden and bubbling at the edges.
  6. Step 6 – Rest before serving: Let it rest for 10 minutes to allow the filling to thicken.
  7. Step 7 – Serve and enjoy: Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, custard, or whipped cream.
