Cuisine: Italian

Ingredients

  • For the Affogato Base
  • 1 large or 2 small scoops vanilla gelato or vanilla ice cream
  • Choose high-quality vanilla for the best flavor and creamy texture.
  • 1 shot hot espresso 30 ml / 1 oz
  • Freshly brewed and piping hot for the best contrast.
  • Optional Add-In
  • 1 tablespoon non-alcoholic drink of choice optional
  • This could be flavored syrup decaf coffee, or another espresso-style beverage for a twist.

Method

  1. Choose a small, heat-safe glass or cup for serving.
  2. Add one large scoop (or two small scoops) of vanilla ice cream to the glass. Keep it frozen until ready to serve.
  3. Brew one fresh shot of espresso. Make sure it is hot to properly melt the ice cream.
  4. If using the optional non-alcoholic add-in, have it ready next to the espresso.
  5. Slowly pour the hot espresso (and optional add-in) directly over the ice cream.
  6. Serve immediately and enjoy while the contrast between hot and cold is at its best.

Notes

Vanilla gelato creates a more authentic Italian-style affogato. Serve in a clear glass to showcase the coffee-and-cream swirls. This dessert should be eaten immediately and is not suitable for storage.
