Ingredients

For the French Toast Sticks
  • 4 slices thick white bread slightly stale
  • 2 large eggs room temperature
  • 1/4 cup milk dairy or non-dairy
  • 1 pinch salt
For the Cinnamon Sugar
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
For Cooking & Serving
  • 3 tablespoons butter divided
  • maple syrup optional, for serving

Method

  1. Trim the crusts from the bread and slice each piece into 3 thick sticks.
  2. Whisk the eggs, milk, and a pinch of salt in a wide bowl.
  3. Mix the sugar and cinnamon on a plate and spread it out evenly.
  4. Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  5. Quickly dip each bread stick into the egg mixture, shaking off excess, then place into the hot pan.
  6. Cook on all sides until golden and crisp, about 6–8 minutes total.
  7. Immediately roll the hot sticks in the cinnamon sugar mixture.
  8. Add the remaining tablespoon of butter to the pan and repeat with the rest.

Notes

Slightly stale bread absorbs better without falling apart. Use brown sugar for deeper caramel flavor, or add vanilla to the egg mixture for extra warmth. Coconut oil is a lighter alternative to butter.
